THE INTELLIGENT PITCH SYSTEM >>> The pitch system is of central importance for multi-megawatt wind turbines. It is the decisive factor in determining the loads which dimension the whole wind turbine and provides safety against excess speeds.
For that reason, LARUS Smart® differs significantly from conventional technology and is characterized by its modularity, dimensioning, the choice of parameters, its switching, safety and installation technology. For the pitch system with LARUS Smart®, W2E has applied a low-maintenance, safe, robust and simple solution. For LARUS Smart®, the Plug & Play concept means that all three axes of the pitch system use identical switch gears. There is no central control. This is one of the factors that continuously guarantee the three-fold independence of the individual pitch axes.
LARUS Smart® is kept operating safely and with low maintenance via a backup solution with lithium ion accumulators or ultra capacitators.
The backup is directly connected with the intermediate circuit of the power inverter. The input power supply and the special charging device of the slip ring transmision do not need to be dimensioned for peak loads. No brake choppers are necessary.
The pitch motors run at specifically lower speed to reduce churning losses of the planetary stages. Powerful, robust inverters allow higher maximum torques. All pitch functions are combined in an industry-proven pitch logic unit that works independently of the control system. A new process prevents the typical peak load-producing windward-tipping of the tower head and preventatively recognizes excess speeds.
W2E offers a wind turbine technology process that is based on a single-blade pitch. The process aims at reducing the operating loads by 20 to 25% and promises the mitigation of extreme loads.

... WITH LITHIUM ION ACCUMULATORS >>>
Similar to condensers, these accumulators can deliver and accept very high currencies, even at low temperatures. For that reason there are no contactors in the pitch system which would have to be switched in case of a power failure. Brake choppers and accumulator loading units are unnecessary.
Under this system, recognition of the so-called Fault Right Through (FRT) voltage drop according to Transmission Code 2007, the BDEW Medium-Voltage Power Grid and other grid codes is not required.
If needed, the accumulator can also be replaced by high-performance condensers without further modifications. This means that the wind turbine can be operated according to market requirements.
