W2E und Universität Rostock kooperieren in Forschung und Lehre

Der Rostocker Technologieentwickler W2E Wind to Energy und die Universität Rostock haben im Beisein des Bildungsministers Mathias Brodkorb und des Energieministers Christian Pegel am 9. August eine weitreichende Kooperationsvereinbarung geschlossen. W2E und Universität Rostock kooperieren seit 2011 bereits in mehreren Forschungsprojekten miteinander. In einem ersten Gemeinschaftsprojekt von Universität Rostock und der Rostocker W2E GmbH wurde eine der modernsten Windenergieanlagen mit einer mittelschnelllaufenden Generator-Getriebe-Einheit entwickelt, die bereits heute schon zukünftige Netzanforderungen erfüllt. Im Jahr 2013 wurde diese sehr innovative Anlage vom Fachmagazin „Windpower Monthly“ zur zweitbesten ihrer Klasse weltweit gekürt. Mit ihren dynamischen Simulationen leistete die Uni Rostock einen wesentlichen Beitrag für diese Entwicklung. Darüber hinaus sind Mitarbeiter von W2E als Lehrkräfte an der Universität Rostock tätig. Durch Unterzeichnung der Kooperationsvereinbarung wurde diese sehr effiziente Zusammenarbeit der letzten Jahre verstetigt.

Vollwartung für Windenergieanlagen mit W2E-Technology

Die W2E Wind to Energy GmbH hat mit der Deutschen Windtechnik X-Service GmbH (ehemals seebaWIND Service GmbH) als 100-prozentige Tochter der Deutschen Windtechnik AG einen erweiterten Servicevertrag abgeschlossen. Mit diesem Vertrag setzt das Entwicklungsunternehmen für Windenergieanlagen aus Rostock ein vertrauensbildendes Signal in Richtung Betreiber und Versicherungsunternehmen. W2E entwickelt komplette Multi-Megawatt-Windenergieanlagen und verkauft diese Anlagentechnologien in Lizenz. In Bezug auf die dann durch die Lizenznehmer installierten und in Betrieb befindlichen Anlagen, stellt W2E das entsprechende Know-How zur Verfügung, welches die technische Verfügbarkeit der Anlagen gewährleistet. Mit dem aktuellen Servicevertrag nimmt die Deutsche Windtechnik Windenergieanlagen der 2,5-MW-Klasse, die aus der Entwicklungsfeder der W2E kommen und bereits in Betrieb sind, auch in die Vollwartung mit Laufzeiten bis zu 20 Jahren. Dieser Schritt wird möglich, da die W2E dem Serviceunternehmen eine ähnliche Stellung vergleichbar der zu ihren Lizenznehmern bzw. Herstellern einräumt. Die Deutsche Windtechnik greift über einen privilegierten Datenzugriff auf aktualisierte Wartungs- und Servicedokumente und in spezifischen Fällen zusätzliche Entwicklerdokumente zu. W2E und Deutsche Windtechnik gestalten ihre enge Kooperation durch eine umfangreiche Rufbereitschaft durch W2E und die Zusammenarbeit bei der Komponentenbeschaffung.


W2E increases the power efficiency of their turbine technology and launch the project DynAWind together with the cooperation partner the University of Rostock

Assisted by academic research the on-going engineering of lightweight-optimized structures for wind turbines will be advanced together with the project partner Lehrstuhl für Technische Mechanik/Dynamik of the University Rostock.

The project partners analyze the dynamic behavior of the turbines with a compehensive measuring campaign done at prototypes of 3 MW turbines and 2 MW turbines.

Besides the experimental analyses of the real dynamic behavior during different load cases at the prototype turbine, theoretical calculations with flexible multi-body models are done on the computer. In that case specific load cases can be simulated in different operation modes. Parameters, defined by guidelines, should be verified on the bases of measurement-series carried out at real turbines. Thus theoretical model assumptions can be compared with the behavior at real operating conditions and calculation models can be optimized.

Increasing the power efficiency takes center for W2E. This includes increasing the availability and reliability. Also the power-related overall weight and the primary specific power generation costs shall be reduced.

The project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.


USA wind turbine maker to produce W2E design

Aeronautica Windpower of Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA, signed a sales and licensing agreement with W2E of Germany to build 2 MW turbines in the US. After 4 years of building 750 kW wind turbines for the Community Wind market sector, Aeronautica Windpower is expanding its product line into the multi-MW sector. The company's focus is on the mid-scale project market, assisting customers with smaller 1 to 20 MW projects which larger turbine manufacturers often do not serve. With a larger machine, but maintaining a focus on smaller projects in class III and IV wind regimes, the company believes it can grow further. It plans to service both the domestic and international export markets which have expressed a desire for US made machines.

W2E Wind to Energy GmbH, of Rostock, Germany, is in the business of developing, field-testing, operating and licensing state-of-the-art wind power plants. For businesses that desire to expand their product line by manufacturing multi-MW wind turbine technology, W2E offers an all-encompassing know-how transfer. Partnering with W2E brings with it the substantial benefits that are typically allocated to manufacturing a market-proven product under licence: a short time to market with no technological entrance risk. W2E strives to build strong relationships, in effect emulating an in-house R&D team for the technology partner. W2E desires to expand its technological reach in the Americas and values Aeronautica Windpower as a partner in workmanship and experienced wind energy player, capable of successfully participating in the multi-MW market.

The licensed W2E design has been sold previously in Europe and Asia, with 100 MW of installed capacity. W2E's design of the 2 MW turbine is based on its successful larger 2.5 MW machine that operates with over 500 installed MW in all terrains in over 10 countries, including the US. A decade ago, the successful installations and smooth operation of W2E designed 2.5 MW turbines on 160 m (525 feet) tall towers paved the way for the wind industry into higher atmospheric layers. Keeping the architecture of the 2.5 MW design, the 2 MW turbine was scaled down to fit in markets where regulations, tariffs or logistics favor a slightly smaller turbine. W2E also offers a medal-winning 3 MW design for technology transfer.

W2E presents further developments for its 3 MW Class

W2E Wind to Energy GmbH upgrades its 3 MW products by enlarging the rotor and increasing the power.

The use of the Winergy HybridDrive integrated into the compact W2E drive train concept opens the door for an upgrade of the 3 MW section. This will serve a huge spectrum of specific projects.

At noise limited projects the standard turbine W2E-120/3fc will be used. This turbine produces high yields even during noise reduced mode. The standard turbine is designed with a low sound power level and completely measured.

For low wind projects it is a major advantage to use a bigger rotor. The W2E-133/3fc has an extraordinary large swept area utilizing its 133 m rotor diameter. Combined with a nominal power of 3.0 MW, the turbine will earn profitable yield even at low wind speeds.

The turbine W2E-120/3.3fc will earn significant high annual yields especially at steady average wind speeds to higher wind speeds.

Achieving steady wind speeds, the hub height of a turbine is a key attribute. Moreover, the tower material, design and availability have an impact on capturing the steady winds. Hence W2E simulates and investigates using different tower concepts for its current technologies. Additionally these towers should be sustainable and future orientated. Hybrid towers up to 140 m hub heights with combinations of steel and concrete or steel and wood are in W2E’s focus.

W2E, a standing and experienced designer of wind turbines and partner for licenced turbines provides the opportunity with these new developments to place an optimal turbine in different projects.

3 MW turbine’s measurements of grid codes finished in March

The well-established wind turbine designer W2E Wind to Energy GmbH launched the operation of two prototypes of its 3 MW technology in 2013/2014. The two turbines are located in the wind park Kankel, Germany and are completely measured and certified.

Now the LVRT-measurements according to IEC 61400-21 and the German guideline FGW, part 3 is almost completed. At the end of March the last results will be expected.

In 2011 W2E placed a highlight in the market by developing its new 3 MW turbine. Cooperating with Siemens/Winergy the compact, medium speed gearbox generator unit HybridDrive has been successfully implemented in the 3 MW class.

For our 3 MW customers and the project developers the completion of the grid code measurements is the last milestone to establish the current technology in the wind market.

The 3 MW turbine now satisfy the requirements of the Germanischen Lloyd’s guideline entirely. German and international grid codes will be fulfilled as well.

The design process was supported by the partner Lehrstuhl für Technische Mechanik/Dynamik, University Rostock and by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag.

W2E offers transfer of technology for immediately market entrance

W2E Wind to Energy GmbH, designer of multi megawatt wind turbines releases open territories for licencing.

W2E designs wind turbines as a solid complete system and sells the measured and certified technology to OEMs and individual power producers (IPP).

These licenced turbines are already manufactured successfully in Europe and Asia and erected worldwide. In the run-up to the licence the target markets will be defined by the licensee. The following territories are operated by e.g. FWT energy GmbH & Co. KG. The 2 MW turbines manufactured by FWT in Germany and purchased globally. FWT however has a manufacturing and purchasing licence for its 2.5 MW and 3 MW turbines only for Germany.

The licensee CleanAyr Energy GmbH, OEM of the 3 MW technology since this year, manufactures and purchases in the markets Germany, Poland, Chile and Brazil.

A fast and sustainable entrance for our interested parties is possible currently and primarily in the young markets South and Central America, Turkey, Sweden, Vietnam and Australia. W2E suggest the acquisition of a product licence from our portfolio which is most suitably fitted to your markets’ needs.

New manufacturer of wind turbines with W2E-technology

W2E successfully develops and field-tests multi-MW wind turbines in more than ten years. Prototyping of the turbines’ technology and component procurement on local markets are supported and accompanied by W2E and its network.

Wind turbines with the W2E-technology are produced worldwide which reflects in a remarkable track record.

From December 2014 a further manufacturer will start production in Germany.

The CleanAyr Energy GmbH sells renewably produced energy from wind and solar sources. To get access to high quality wind turbines at an optimal cost level CleanAyr Energy will establish production and added value in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In a first step CleanAyr Energy will produce 54 devices of the 3-MW-class as a W2E-licensor. First turbines are going to be erected at the end of 2015.

The establishment of the new producer CleanAyr Energy is supported by close cooperation with local project developers, various component suppliers and the developer of the technology – W2E.


W2E finalizes certification of 3-MW-technology

Hamburg September 2014

Starting with the development of the 3-MW-technology already in 2011 W2E set some points on the market. Together with Siemens AG a cooperation on the application of a compact mid-speed drive train generator – the hybrid drive – was agreed.

Within short time the well experienced W2E-Team could erect two prototypes with a rotor diameter of 120 m at the wind test field Kankel near Rostock and put them into service.

At the international fair “WindEnergy Hamburg 2014” the technical control board “TÜV Nord” will hand over the A-Design assessment to W2E.

With that the 3-MW-technology is ready to market. Already today project developers apply that technology in their projects and licensors start with serial production.

The 3-MW devices correspond entirely to the requirements of Germanischer Lloyd’s 2010 issue. Likewise German and international grid-codes are fulfilled.

The development was supported by the chair of Technical Mechanics/Dynamics at the University of Rostock. The entire project benefitted from the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic  Affairs and Energy in consequence of a decision by the German Bundestag.
